The old research base Sanae III was unsafe for occupation and the Department of Environmental Affairs build the new research base Sanae IV, 3300m 2 floor area, on a rocky outcrop, Vesleskarvet, towards the end of the previous millennium. All the building materials were sourced in South Africa and other parts of the world in shipped in containers. The building process was done by the Building Teams of the Department of Public works in the Summer month’s , November to end of February, of a span of 4 years. The Building was occupied in 1998 and is fully self sufficient.
